Buying Honey Guide

Updated: Dec 15, 2024

When buying honey, opt for raw products if possible. they will retain more nutritional benefits than pasteurized honey. It's surprising how honeys made from different nectar can have quite distinctive tastes - generally, darker products have a richer flavor. (Note: honey should not be given to children less than a year old, as it can cause toxins to build up in their gut.) If you're buying honey from a store, take care: some shop-bought products in the US contain additives such as corn syrup, and lack the nutritional benefits of the genuine product. In the EU, products with these additives cannot be labelled "honey". If your honey crystallizes, this is perfectly normal. You can use it as it is, or to return it to a smoother state, just stand the jar in a bowl of warm water. (Don't microwave it or it will lose a lot of its nutritional goodness.) Honey burns at higher temperatures, so cook honey- based dishes at a low or medium heat if you can.

Here are some helpful tips for buying honey:

1. Choose Raw Honey

  • Look for labels that say "raw" or "unfiltered" to ensure the honey retains its natural nutrients and enzymes.

2. Check the Source

  • Opt for locally sourced honey or honey from trusted producers to ensure quality and freshness.

3. Understand the Labels

  • Labels like "organic" or "pure" can indicate quality, but always read the ingredient list to ensure no added sugars or syrups.

4. Look at the Color and Texture

  • Light-colored honeys, like acacia, are often milder in flavor, while darker honeys, like buckwheat, tend to be richer and more robust.

5. Buy According to Purpose

  • Choose floral, mild honey for tea or desserts, and richer honey for marinades or baking.

6. Test for Authenticity

  • Pure honey should not have a sugary aftertaste and may crystallize over time, which is a natural process.

7. Research the Brand

  • Look for brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical beekeeping practices.

8. Be Wary of Low Prices

  • Extremely cheap honey may be blended or adulterated. Invest in quality for the best flavor and health benefits.

9. Look for Certifications

  • Certifications like USDA Organic or Fair Trade add an extra layer of trust to your purchase.

10. Experiment with Types

  • Try varietal honeys (e.g., acacia, clover, manuka) to explore different flavors and health benefits.
